For Parents (Nature.com): ‘Increases In Total Time Watching TV By Children Associated With Subsequent Decreases In Vocabulary And Math Skills, Classroom Engagement, Victimization By Classmates, And Physical Prowess At Kindergarten’

Early childhood television viewing and kindergarten entry readiness (Nature,  Advance online publication 07 August 2013):

Background:

Using a large population-based sample, this study aims to verify whether televiewing at 29 mo, a common early childhood pastime, is prospectively associated with school readiness at 65 mo.

Methods:

Participants are a prospective longitudinal cohort of 991 girls and 1,006 boys from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development with parent-reported data on weekly hours of televiewing at 29 mo of age. We conducted a series of ordinary least-squares regressions in which children’s scores on direct child assessments of vocabulary, mathematical knowledge, and motor skills, as well as kindergarten teacher reports of socioemotional functioning, were linearly regressed on early televiewing.

Results:

Every SD increase (1.2 h) in daily televiewing at 29 mo predicted decreases in receptive vocabulary, number knowledge scores, classroom engagement, and gross motor locomotion scores, as well as increases in the frequency of victimization by classmates.

Conclusion:

Increases in total time watching television at 29 mo were associated with subsequent decreases in vocabulary and math skills, classroom engagement (which is largely determined by attention skills), victimization by classmates, and physical prowess at kindergarten. These prospective associations, independent of key potential confounders, suggest the need for better parental awareness and compliance with existing viewing recommendations put forth by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

  1. Average daily watching is 8 hours a day.
That is a full work day for adults, that is the average for children.
No wonder they cannot speak, read or think……….the dumbing down of America starts and ends with the TV.
There is one thing everyone could do….boycott TV. If they would do that, people would pay more attention to their real lives, and pay closer attention to what the crooks in government are doing…….might even force some changes.
I saw on the Friday Data Dump they are arming the 30,000 drones flying over our lands……….I read it, didn’t see it on TV…..sure it was not mentioned.
Looking overseas at real news, NSA spying, US meddling in overseas wars to enrich private corporations at taxpayer expense along with some other very important stories.
Doing a quick scan of TV 24/7 news that isn’t:
CNN: Hillary Clinton HLN: Housewives couple pleads not guilty CNNI: Egypt, gov’t state of curfew/military rule (actually somewhat real) FNN: Politics and race FBN: Finance, MSNBC: Political Gossip, Bloomberg: Finance.
Not one word on NSA spying, arming the drones, or any story of importance.
No wonder the kids are not doing well.

  2. On another subject, a very important story that the US propaganda/obfuscation machine is not presenting on US media TV or US websites is this one. I thought this would be of interest to you. The amount of stuff this government is doing without telling anyone is shocking. These are the acts of a totalitarian dictatorship, not a republic.
With all the 24/7 news that isn’t being broadcast daily on TV, it is remarkable how no story of any portend gets covered. There are other stories related to this one on the UK Guardian.
