In addition a further $600 million was used to help make Ukraine a failed state hell hole
On Tuesday, the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations scheduled a two-hour anti-Russian hate-fest. Lies, misinformation and jaw-dropping stupidity were on full display. The star witness of course, was Tricky Vicky Nuland.
These congressional committee meetings crack me up. In theory, they’re supposed to be interviewing witnesses to collect information. In reality it’s a platform for congressmen to make speeches satisfying the special interests who own them and then they read questions from prepared notes provided to them by “experts” or lobbyists (or maybe the witnesses themselves). Then they get the answers they want to hear from the witnesses. It is 100% theater. Continue reading »
The mood is changing in Europe
Oskar Lafontaine is a major force in German politics. When he comes out swinging this way, you know something is changing.
He has been an outsized figure in German politics since the mid-70s. He was chairman of the SPD (one of Germany’s two main parties) for four years, the SPD’s candidate for chancellor in 1990, minister of finance for two years, and then chairman of the Left party in the 2000s. He is married to Sarah Wagenknecht, political heavyweight, who is currently co-chairman of Left party. Continue reading »
– Nuland’s Nemesis: Will Greece Be Destroyed to Save Her From Russia, Like Ukraine? (Dances With Bears via Blacklisted News, July 6, 2015):
By John Helmer, the longest continuously serving foreign correspondent in Russia, and the only western journalist to direct his own bureau independent of single national or commercial ties. Helmer has also been a professor of political science, and an advisor to government heads in Greece, the United States, and Asia. He is the first and only member of a US presidential administration (Jimmy Carter) to establish himself in Russia. Originally published at Dances with Bears
A putsch in Athens to save allied Greece from enemy Russia is in preparation by the US and Germany, with backing from the non-taxpayers of Greece – the Greek oligarchs, Anglo-Greek shipowners, and the Greek Church. At the highest and lowest level of Greek government, and from Thessaloniki to Milvorni, all Greeks understand what is happening. Yesterday they voted overwhelmingly to resist. According to a high political figure in Athens, a 40-year veteran, “what is actually happening is a slow process of regime change.” Continue reading »
– US Sends Over 100 US Tanks, Armor To Latvia As Nuland “Confirms” Russia Delivering Weapons (ZeroHedge, March 10, 2015):
No lesser trustworthy character than Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland explained this morning that the US can “confirm” new Russian weapons delivery to Ukraine and that they “can tell” when Russia sends in new weapons (though offering no explanation of this statement). This comment to the Senate Committee comes a day after the US delivered ‘lethal aid’ to Latvia – 120 armored units (including tanks) – with US Army General John O’Conner who witnessed the tanks arriving on Latvian soil said, “Freedom must be fought for, freedom must be defended.” And finally, one more shot in the eye of the germans, deputy under-secretary of Defense Brian McKeon said the US is “actively considering more weapons for Ukraine,” seemingly implying they alreadt sent some?
The rhetoric is heating up
- *ASSISTANT SEC. OF STATE NULAND SPEAKS BEFORE SENATE COMMITTEE
- *U.S. CAN CONFIRM NEW RUSSIAN WEAPONS DELIVERY TO UKRAINE:NULAND
- *NULAND SAYS U.S. CAN TELL IF RUSSIA SENDS IN NEW WEAPONS
- *NULAND SAYS UKRAINE LEADERS KNOW IN RACE TO REFORM GOVERNMENT
- *DEPUTY UNDER SECRETARY OF DEFENSE BRIAN MCKEON SPEAKS TO SENATE
- *U.S. ‘ACTIVELY’ CONSIDERING MORE WEAPONS FOR UKRAINE: MCKEON
And this comes a day after the US delivered lethal aid to Latvia…
Latvia has confirmed more than 120 armored units, including tanks, have been delivered by the US. According to the Latvian Ministry of Defense, these include M1A2 Abrams tanks and M2A3 Bradley armored vehicles. Continue reading »
– Nuland has tough time justifying US involvement in Ukraine (RT, May 9, 2014):
While the Obama administration insists that supporting Ukrainian Presidential elections are vital to national interests, some members of the US political elite are questioning the costs of getting involved.
During a two hour House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, the US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland shared her assessment of the US role in Ukraine’s crisis and the upcoming presidential election.
But instantaneously she came under fire from Dana Rohrabacher, a republican congressman from California.
“We did have legitimate election before, and the legitimate president was removed after we had major street violence. There were pictures of people running around that we were told were neo-Nazis,” Rohrabacher challenged Nuland.
Nuland faced a hard time coming up with answers. Continue reading »
– Churkin: US behind Ukraine crisis after investing $5bn in ‘regime change’ (RT, April 23, 2014):
The US is to blame for the events in Ukraine as it invested $5 billion in regime change in the country, taking a more radical stance that its EU allies, Vitaly Churkin, Russia’s envoy to the UN, said.
“It seems it was the Americans, who tried to push through the most radical scenario,” Churkin said in an interview with Rossiya 24 channel. “They didn’t want any sort of compromise between [ousted President Viktor] Yanukovich and the opposition. And, I think, they came to the conclusion that it was time to cash in those $5 billion and handle the matter towards abrupt regime change, which, eventually, happened.”
This explains why the US, but not the European Union, took center stage when the coup resulted in legal vacuum in Kiev, he added.
US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland told CNN on Monday that Washington has invested around $5 billion into supporting democracy in Ukraine since the fall of Soviet Union.
But Churkin has doubts about Nuland’s claims, saying that “any sane person would, at least, say that those investments didn’t pay off.” Continue reading »
– What Is Happening In Ukraine Is Far More Important Than Most People Realize (Economic Collapse, Feb 24, 2014):
What the people of Ukraine are being put through is absolutely horrible. They are caught in the middle of a massive tug of war between the East and the West, and they are paying a great price for it. Ultimately, Ukraine will end up either being dominated by Russia (a bad outcome) or by the EU and the United States (another bad outcome). Most Ukrainians just want to be free and want to be able to build a better future for themselves and their families, but it is extremely unlikely that they will be able to escape the specter of foreign domination. Meanwhile, the violence in Ukraine is planting the seeds for a potentially much larger conflict down the road. The days of “friendly relations” between the United States and Russia are now gone. Russia is absolutely furious that the U.S. has fueled a violent revolution on its own border, and it is something that Russian officials will not forget for a very long time. In return, U.S. officials are taking an increasingly harsh stance toward Russia. In the end, the seeds that are being planted right now could ultimately blossom into a full-blown conflict between the superpowers in the years to come.
Let there be no mistake – the United States is heavily involved in what is going on in Ukraine. Even the New York Times admits this. And the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine and the Assistant Secretary of State have been caught on tape discussing their next moves in getting a new government installed in Ukraine. Continue reading »
From the article:
Moscow portrays the anti-Yanukovich demonstrators as paid Western agents and seems to be pushing for Yanukovich to order a crackdown to clear the streets.
In some of the sharpest language yet, the Kremlin’s point man on Ukraine, Sergei Glazyev, urged the Ukrainian leader to stop negotiating with “putschists”. He accused Washington of arming, funding and training the opposition to take power.
Nuland called the remarks “pure fantasy”.
– U.S. diplomat plays down leaked call; Merkel angry (Reuters, Feb 7, 2014):
A top U.S. diplomat tried to play down the damage to Washington’s diplomacy in Ukraine from a leaked telephone call on Friday, but German Chancellor Angela Merkel called an obscene remark about the EU “absolutely unacceptable.”
U.S. officials blamed Moscow for the Internet leak of recordings of Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and the U.S. ambassador in Kiev discussing a possible future government for Ukraine, where Washington and Brussels back anti-Kremlin demonstrators.
– State Department Confirms Authenticity Of Intercepted Ukraine Phone Call: Accuses Russia Of Dirty Tricks (ZeroHedge, Feb 6, 2014):
If there was any doubt whether the intercepted “Fuck the EU” phone call between Assistant Secretary of State Nuland and the US Ambassador to the Ukraine Pyatt was authentic, it can now be laid to rest: in an earlier response to questions from reporters, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki did not dispute authenticity of recording and essentially confirmed it was real “I didn’t say it was inauthentic.”
However, in the tried and true fashion of assigning blame elsewhere, the world learned that it was really all Russia’s fault and the released intercept was a “new low of Russian tradecraft.” Psaki added that there are moments “in every diplomatic relationship” when you disagree, Psaki says. But the absolute punchline: “It’s concerning that private conversation was recorded.”
Perhaps maybe the NSA can opine on the concernability of a private conversation being recorded.
Then again in a world in which only the NSA is allowed to record every single private conversation, one can easily see why the State Dept thought it was safe to discuss its state subordination strategy over what appears to have been an unencrypted landline. At least the CIA used to communicate by encrypted redlines.
Finally, while Russian “tradecraft” may have hit a new low, so did US reputation and standing abroad, however offset by the humiliation and embarrassment of US foreign policymakers which has never been higher.
– “Fuck The EU” – US State Department Blasts Europe; Revealed As Alleged Mastermind Behind Ukraine Unrest (ZeroHedge, Feb 6, 2014):
A leaked recording of a telephone conversation allegedly between US assistant secretary of state Victoria Nuland and the US envoy to the Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt discussing who should be in Ukraine’s next government has, according to The FT, threatened to fuel east-west tensions over the troubled nation’s future. In apparent frustration with the EU – which has failed to join the US in threatening sanctions against Ukraine’s leaders if they violently crush the protests – the voice resembling Ms Nuland at one point exclaims “Fuck the EU”. As the two US diplomats decide whether “Klitsch” or “Yats” should be ‘in’ or ‘out’, listeners will be reminded (uncomfortably) that the governments of Ukraine and Russia previously alleged that the protests are being funded and orchestrated by the US.
The authenticity of the recording has not been confirmed (though comparisons to Nuland’s recent media appearances provide some confidence) – the FT reported that the US embassy in Kiev declined to comment, which is a tacit admission: if the clip was a fake, the US would immediately make it clear.
Needless to say, as the FT adds, “[this clip] could also bolster a propaganda campaign by the governments of Ukraine and Russia alleging that the protests that erupted against Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovich last November are being funded and orchestrated by the US.” Its release on the day the Sochi Olympics start is also somewhat disturbing.
An excerpt on the US meddling… Continue reading »
