The Toxins That Threaten Our Brains (The Atlantic, March 18, 2015):

Leading scientists recently identified a dozen chemicals as being responsible for widespread behavioral and cognitive problems. But the scope of the chemical dangers in our environment is likely even greater. Why children and the poor are most susceptible to neurotoxic exposure that may be costing the U.S. billions of dollars and immeasurable peace of mind.

Forty-one million IQ points. That’s what Dr. David Bellinger determined Americans have collectively forfeited as a result of exposure to lead, mercury, and organophosphate pesticides. In a 2012 paper published by the National Institutes of Health, Bellinger, a professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School, compared intelligence quotients among children whose mothers had been exposed to these neurotoxins while pregnant to those who had not. Bellinger calculates a total loss of 16.9 million IQ points due to exposure to organophosphates, the most common pesticides used in agriculture. Continue reading »

As a side note:

Exposing the iodized salt scam …

… the iodide content of iodized salt is ridiculously low,

… of which only 10% is bioavailable,

… your body needs iodine and iodide, not just potassium iodide,

… by the time the iodized salt reaches the grocery store about 50% of its iodide content has ‘vaporized’,

… store the salt another 30 days and the salt loses (about) another 50% of its iodide,

… iodized salt contains lots of aluminum,

… etc.

Don’t miss this lecture!

Ask yourself:

“Why did information on (the many benefits of) iodine disappear from medical schools and medical libraries?”

And yes, it is not just the information about the importance of iodine that disappeared from the bookshelves.

As a side note:

Persistent Associations between Maternal Prenatal Exposure to Phthalates on Child IQ at Age 7 Years (PLOS, Dec 10, 2014):

Abstract

Background

Prior research reports inverse associations between maternal prenatal urinary phthalate metabolite concentrations and mental and motor development in preschoolers. No study evaluated whether these associations persist into school age.

Methods

In a follow up of 328 inner-city mothers and their children, we measured prenatal urinary metabolites of di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), butylbenzyl phthalate (BBzP), di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP), di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate and diethyl phthalate in late pregnancy. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, 4th edition was administered at child age 7 years and evaluates four areas of cognitive function associated with overall intelligence quotient (IQ).

The Two Scariest Charts in the World (Erico Matias Tavares, Sinclair & Co.):

There are plenty of things to worry about these days. A cursory look through today’s (13 Sep 14) drudgereport.com sets the tone: the Pope says WWIII is underway; a senior Democrat accuses the Republicans of endangering civilization; drones are invading the privacy of citizens; militias are blocking traffic in the Mexican border; Feds run a US$589 billion budget deficit; the UK might fall apart; the Ebola epidemic is getting serious in Africa; a mystery virus spreads to NY and CT (and we could not resist adding this one: Hillary Clinton is doing yoga). Harvard Study: Fluoride Lowers Children’s Intelligence By 7 IQ Points

We Now Have Scientific Proof That People Are Getting Stupider (The American Dream, Aug 24, 2014):

Are people dumber than they used to be?  Were previous generations mentally sharper than us?  You may have suspected that people are getting stupider for quite some time, but now we actually have scientific evidence that this is the case.  As you will read about below, average IQs are dropping all over the globe, SAT scores in the U.S. have been declining for decades, and scientists have even discovered that our brains have been getting smaller over time.  So if it seems on some days like you woke up in the middle of the movie “Idiocracy”, you might not be too far off.  Much of the stuff that they put in our junk food is not good for brain development, our education system is a total joke and most Americans are absolutely addicted to mindless entertainment.  Fortunately we have a lot of technology that does much of our thinking for us these days, because if we had to depend on our own mental capabilities most of us would be in a tremendous amount of trouble. Cannabis smoking ‘permanently lowers IQ’ (Telegraph, Aug 27, 2012):

Teenagers who regularly smoke cannabis are putting themselves at risk of permanently damaging their intelligence, according to a landmark study.

Researchers found persistent users of the drug, who started smoking it at school, had lower IQ scores as adults.

They were also significantly more likely to have attention and memory problems in later life, than their peers who abstained.

Furthermore, those who started as teenagers and used it heavily, but quit as adults, did not regain their full mental powers, found academics at King’s College London and Duke University in the US.

Developmental Fluoride Neurotoxicity: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (Environmental Health Perspectives):

Abstract

Background: Although fluoride may cause neurotoxicity in animal models and acute fluoride poisoning causes neurotoxicity in adults, very little is known of its effects on children’s neurodevelopment.

Objective: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies to investigate the effects of increased fluoride exposure and delayed neurobehavioral development.

Methods: We searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE, Water Resources Abstracts, and TOXNET databases through 2011 for eligible studies. We also searched the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database, as many studies on fluoride neurotoxicity have been published in Chinese journals only. In total, we identified 27 eligible epidemiological studies with high and reference exposures, endpoints of IQ scores or related cognitive function measures with means and variances for the two exposure groups. We estimated the standardized mean difference (SMD) between exposed and reference groups across all studies using random effects models. We conducted sensitivity analyses restricted to studies using the same outcome assessment and having drinking water fluoride as the only exposure. Cochran test for heterogeneity between studies, Begg’s funnel plot and Egger test to assess publication bias were performed. Meta-regressions to explore sources of variation in mean differences among the studies were conducted.

Results: The standardized weighted mean difference in IQ score between exposed and reference populations was -0.45 (95% CI -0.56 to -0.35) using a random-effects model. Thus, children in high fluoride areas had significantly lower IQ scores than those who lived in low fluoride areas. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses also indicated inverse associations, although the substantial heterogeneity did not appear to decrease.

Conclusions: The results support the possibility of an adverse effect of high fluoride exposure on children’s neurodevelopment. Future research should include detailed individual-level information on prenatal exposure, neurobehavioral performance, and covariates for adjustment. Continue reading »

Children brought up on healthy diets are more intelligent compared with their junk food eating counterparts, new research suggests.

Parents were quizzed about the types and frequency of the food and drink their children consumed when they were three, four, seven and eight and a half years old Photo: ALAMY

Toddlers fed a diet packed high in fats, sugars, and processed foods had lower IQs than those fed pasta, salads and fruit, it was found.

The effect is so great that researchers from the University of Bristol said those children with a “healthier” diet may get an IQ boost.

Scientists stressed good diet was vital in a child’s early life as the brain grows at its fastest rate during the first three years of life.

This indicated head growth at this time is linked to intellectual ability and “it is possible that good nutrition during this period may encourage optimal brain growth”.

Scientists tracked the long term health and wellbeing of around 14,000 children born in 1991 and 1992 as part of the West Country’s Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC).

William Potter and his mum Lynn Potter

PACKMOORE, England, Feb. 17 (UPI) — A 3-year-old British boy has become one of the youngest-ever members of the world’s largest organization for people with high IQs.

David Potter and Lynn Goldstraw of Packmoore, England, said their son, William Potter, was accepted to Mensa after scoring an IQ of 140 on the organization’s tests, placing him in the 99.6 percentile among Britons, the Daily Mail reported Wednesday.

“He could count to 20 before he was 2 and knew his alphabet and colors and shapes,” Goldstraw said. “When in his pushchair, he’d read car number plates. Now when we go in the car, he’s in the back with a map on his knee.”

“He reads the signs and tells you when to turn,” she said. “He’s like a sponge. You only have to tell him something once and he remembers it. I think a lot of it is about spending time with him.” Continue reading »

Artificial food colours are set to be removed from hundreds of products after a team of university researchers warned they were doing as much damage to children’s brains as lead in petrol.

Academics at Southampton University, who carried out an official study into seven additives for the Food Standards Agency (FSA), said children’s intelligence was being significantly damaged by E-numbers. After receiving the advice last month, officials at the FSA have advised their directors to call for the food industry to remove six additives named in the study by the end of next year.
