- Forget Horse Meat or Fake Tuna, Rat Meat is Being Sold as Lamb in China (Liberty Blitzkrieg, May3, 2013):

It seems as if those engaged in food fraud just want to keep escalating their game.  First we were horrified by horse meat and fake tuna, then dog meat, but now it’s gotten worse.  Much worse.  In China, the food fraudsters have take things to an entirely new level by mixing rat, fox and mink meat with gelatin additives and passing it off as lamb.  You may want to avoid that food cart next time you’re in Shanghai.

From The Washington Post:

BEIJING — Chinese police have broken up a criminal ring accused of taking meat from rats and foxes and selling it as lamb in the country’s latest food safety scandal.

The Ministry of Public Security released results of a three-month crackdown on food safety violators, saying in a statement that authorities investigated more than 380 cases and arrested 904 suspects.Among those arrested were 63 people who allegedly ran an operation in Shanghai and the coastal city of Wuxi that bought fox, mink, rat and other meat that had not been tested for quality and safety, processed it with additives like gelatin and passed it off as lamb.

- Weather radicalization worsening, global food supply at increased risk of regional failures (Natural News, May 3, 2013):

If you live in the USA, you’re probably experiencing some of the effects of a cold weather front and multi-state blizzard that’s sweeping across much of North America. While the weather felt like summer just a few days ago, suddenly much of the upper Midwest is blanketed in snow and reeling from freezing temperatures.

As weather.com reports:

On the final two days of April, Amarillo, Texas saw temperatures rise well into the 90s. A record high temperature of 97 degrees was set on April 30. A little more than 24 hours later on the evening of May 1, temperatures in this Texas Panhandle city plummeted into the 30s before bottoming out at 33 degrees on the morning of May 2. The wind chill at the time was 19 degrees.

Wunderground.com adds:

A rare and historic May snowstorm continues to pelt Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin with snowfall amounts unprecedented in the historical record for the month of May. Rochester, Minnesota has received 7″ of snow, smashing their all-time May snowstorm record of 2″, set on May 4 – 5, 1944. Over 3″ of snow has fallen in Omaha, Nebraska, breaking their all-time May snowstorm record of 2″ on May 9, 1945. It was the first one-inch-plus May snowfall anywhere in the state of Iowa since 1967.

Topeka, Kansas, Kansas City, Missouri, and Des Moines, Iowa are all expected to get an inch or more of snow on Thursday through Friday. This would be only the second May snowstorm in recorded history for those cities.

But wait a sec, isn’t it May? Isn’t this supposed to be spring?

- Groundbreaking study: Aronia, curcumin extracts effectively kill brain cancer cell line (Natural News, Oct 9, 2012):

Researchers from the Department of Natural Sciences at Middlesex University in the U.K. have made a fascinating discovery concerning two natural “superfood” compounds and their ability to kill cancer cells. It turns out that both chokeberry extract (Aronia melanocarpa) and turmeric (Curcuma longa) work together with one another to stop the spread of malignant cancer cells, as well as induce cancer cell death, a process more commonly known as apoptosis.

The study, which was published in the journal Oncology Reports, evaluated the effects of both Aronia and curcumin on a specific glioblastoma line of brain cancer cells known as U373. Because earlier studies have already established that both herbs possess unique anticancer properties, the researchers, who themselves have been studying the herbs’ therapeutic benefits for several years, decided to examine further how one of the most common and deadly forms of brain cancer might respond to these two anticancer superfoods.

It turns out that Aronia berry, which is rich in anthocyanin flavonoids and other antioxidants and nutrients, is necrotic to the U373 cancer cell line, which means it actually kills cancer cells. And turmeric, which is abundant in the anticancer polyphenol curcumin, effectively induces apoptosis in U373, meaning that it stops this deadly cell line from producing new cells and spreading. When used together, both Aronia and turmeric appear to elicit a one-two punch defense against brain cancer.

- Child Hunger Is Exploding In Greece – And 14 Signs That It Is Starting To Happen In America Too (Economic Collapse, April 25, 2013):

The world is heading into a horrific economic nightmare, and an inordinate amount of the suffering is going to fall on innocent children.  If you want to get an idea of what America is going to look like in the not too distant future, just check out what is happening in Greece.  At this point, Greece is experiencing a full-blown economic depression.  As I have written about previously, the unemployment rate in Greece has now risen to 27 percent, which is much higher than the peak unemployment rate that the U.S. economy experienced during the Great Depression of the 1930s.  And as you will read about below, child hunger is absolutely exploding in Greece right now.  Some families are literally trying to survive on pasta and ketchup.  But don’t think for a moment that it can’t happen here.  Sadly, the truth is that child hunger is already rising very rapidly in our poverty-stricken cities.  Never before have we had so many Americans unable to take care of themselves.  Food stamp enrollment and child homelessness have soared to brand new all-time records, and there are actually thousands of Americans that are so poor that they live in tunnels underneath our cities.  But for millions of other Americans, the suffering is not quite so dramatic.  Instead, they just watch their hopes and their dreams slowly slip away as they struggle to find a way to make it from month to month.  There are millions of parents that lead lives that are filled with constant stress and anxiety as they try to figure out how to provide the basics for their children.  How do you tell a child that you can’t give them any dinner even though you have been trying as hard as you can?  What many families go through on a regular basis is absolutely heartbreaking.  Unfortunately, more poor families slip through the cracks with each passing day, and these are supposedly times in which we are experiencing an “economic recovery”.  So what are things going to look like when the next major economic downturn strikes? - Teen who ate almost nothing but ramen noodles for 13 years has health of 80-year-old (Natural News, April 25, 2013):

Since she was about five years old, Georgi Readman from the Isle of Wight in the U.K. has been eating primarily ramen noodles and nothing more for virtually every meal. And now the 18-year-old girl is suffering the health consequences, as reports indicate that her persistent aversion to fruit and vegetables has rendered her severely malnourished and about as healthy as an average 80-year-old.

It all began when Georgi first savored the artificial flavors and salt chemicals laced in a packet of ramen noodles when she was a child. She almost immediately decided that ramen noodles were her food of choice, and gradually phased out all other foods, including nourishing foods like whole fruit and vegetables. Today, she eats ramen noodles for almost every meal, even though it has caused her quite a few problems both bodily and socially.

“I hate the texture of fruit and vegetables,” says Georgi, as quoted by the New York Daily News (NYDN). “I can’t go to my friends’ for dinner or go out for meals because I don’t want them to see me freak out if the side salad touches the stuff I eat.” Continue reading »

- “Working Poor” Spark 170% Increase In Britons Needing Food Handouts In Past Year (ZeroHedge, April 24, 2013):

While the dismal news of endlessly rising food stamp recipients in the US seems to be glossed over by most of the media because, well, stock markets are at all-time highs, in Britain, things are becoming increasingly awful. As the FT reports, the number of people receiving emergency food rations has surged from 130,000 to almost 350,000 in the past year. As inflation eroded incomes and government austerity pushed hundreds of thousands into crisis, the ‘working poor’ has emerged. The food bank provider estimates about half of the households it helped has at least one person in work. During the Great Depression, the desperation was graphically evident with long lines of families waiting for soup; in the new depression, the record levels of starving and needy are hidden by a blanket of EBT cards and direct transfers from government. The situation is no less terrible – no matter how hidden from view. As one food bank manager noted, “the fundamental thing is that more and more people are living an increasingly precarious life financially.”

The 170 per cent surge in demand for food handouts will fuel debate over the impact of government austerity on poorer households, amid concerns about the effect on demand as consumers cut back on everyday spending. Continue reading »

- McDonald’s Hamburger Looks the Same…14 Years After Purchase! (Liberty Blitzkrieg, April 23, 2013):

I’ve heard rumors about this before, but figured it was just an urban legend.  Apparently not!  So Utah resident, David Whipple, originally decided he wanted to save a McDonald’s burger for a couple of months to see what would happen.  It didn’t decompose at all. Then he forgot about it in a coat pocket for a year or so until his wife accidentally found it.  Still no change.  So he decided to save it even longer.  Now, 14 years later, he has informed the world that amazingly it still looks the same.

From the Daily Mail:

A Utah man has unearthed a McDonald’s hamburger he bought in 1999 – and the sandwich looks exactly the same as the day it was first flipped.

David Whipple kept the fast food meal for a month to show friends how the preservative-packed hamburger would keep its composure.

‘My wife didn’t discover it until at least a year or two after that,’ he said. ‘And we pulled it out and said “oh my gosh. I can’t believe it looks the same way.”‘

However, even he was shocked to see that the hamburger still looks the same a whopping 14 years later.

The burger had no signs of mold, fungus or even a strange odor, the show’s hosts said. The only thing that had changed over the years was that the pickle had disintegrated.

Whipple, who still has the original receipt for the burger, said he now shows the sandwich to his grandchildren to encourage them to eat healthily.

Who needs canned beans, spam and freeze dried food when apparently all you need are Happy Meals?
