Acid Attack ‘No Go Zones’ in London, Admits Labour MP:

The frequency of acid attacks in London has turned parts of the British capital into “no go zones”, a former Labour minister has said.

The United Kingdom has “the highest rate of attacks per capita” in the world, claimed Stephen Timms, Labour MP for East Ham, in comments to fellow MPs reported by the Daily Mail.

Figures show the number of acid attacks in Britain shot up between 2012 and 2016 by more than 500 per cent. There were just 73 recorded attacks in 2012 but a massive 469 in 2016.

UK: Acid Attacks Now at ‘Epidemic Levels’, Says Burns Surgeon:

A burns surgeon who treats many acid attack victims coming out of East London has suggested that the proliferation of such crimes is now at epidemic levels.

Dr Martin Niall, a burn surgeon at Mid-Essex Hospital, told National Public Radio (NPR) in the U.S. that acid attacks in Britain “are now at levels that one of my colleagues described as epidemic”.

He added: “Everyone, ourselves included, has been shocked by this emerging threat to public health.”

In terms of attacks per head of population, London is now the acid attack capital of the world, with a 74 per cent rise in assaults — from 261 to 454 — between 2015 and 2016.

The UK now has one of the highest number of recorded acid attacks per person of any country in the world, and the figure is expected to rise further, police have warned.

Senior officers believe the horrific crimes are not always being reported, meaning the unprecedented number of known assaults using corrosive substances may be a fraction of the true total.

More than 400 such attacks were recorded in the six months to April – an average of two a day.

Four female American tourists have been attacked with acid in the French city of Marseille.

The women were sprayed with acid by a 41-year-old woman who has been detained by police, according to the Marseille prosecutor’s office.

Between 2011 and 2016, there was almost 1,500 reports of attacks involving corrosive fluids in the capital.

There were 431 attacks last year alone, compared to 261 the previous year.
