3D-Printed Ovaries Offer Promise as Infertility Treatment

3D-Printed Ovaries Offer Promise as Infertility Treatment:

A female mouse with synthetic ovaries created on a 3D-printer conceived and gave birth to healthy offspring. Researchers said the study could lead to an infertility treatment for women with cancer.

The ovary was created using a porous scaffold made from gelatin, according to the all-female research team, which described the study this week in the journal Nature Communications. Gelatin is a form of collagen, the most abundant protein in mammals. Compared to natural collagen, gelatin is more broken down and thus can be made into an ink that can be used in a 3D printer.

Britain’s Minority Report Style ‘Pre-Crime’ Programme Unexpectedly Unearthed

Britain’s Minority Report Style ‘Pre-Crime’ Programme Unexpectedly Unearthed:

By Graham Vanbergen – Peter Hitchens recently mentioned in his blog that technology will eventually enslave us all. He referred to the recent film “Ghost in the Shell’ thus:

I was intrigued to see that the future world in which this film is set is – once again – in a place of gloom and decay, much like now but worse. There are gangsters and sordid bars, people smoke, everyone’s crammed into hamster-cage flats in inhuman megacities. Ever since Blade Runner and Alien, and also in Minority Report, new technology is not seen as a road to happiness, liberty or prosperity. I used to think this was pessimistic. Now I think they’ve got it about right.”

Today we live in an age where there is a technology battle front being waged against citizens of the West and the people are losing it on every front – nowhere is that battle raging most in Western democracies than in Britain.

One coal worker or 79 solar ones, same electricity

One coal worker or 79 solar ones, same electricity:

The New York Times tells us that Today’s Energy Jobs Are in Solar, Not Coal. But watch the pea –  these jobs are “energy jobs”, not jobs that use energy.

Apparently it takes 79 people to create the same energy through solar as one person does through coal. (And that would be cheaper, how? )

The Military is Using Human Brain Waves to Teach Robots How to Shoot

The Military is Using Human Brain Waves to Teach Robots How to Shoot:

Modern sensors can see farther than humans. Electronic circuits can shoot faster than nerves and muscles can pull a trigger. Humans still outperform armed robots in knowing what to shoot at — but new research funded in part by the Army may soon narrow that gap.

Researchers from DCS Corp and the Army Research Lab fed datasets of human brain waves into a neural network — a type of artificial intelligence — which learned to recognize when a human is making a targeting decision. They presented their paper on it at the annual Intelligent User Interface conference in Cyprus in March.

Why is this a big deal? Machine learning relies on highly structured data, numbers in rows that software can read. But identifying a target in the chaotic real world is incredibly difficult for computers. The human brain does it easily, structuring data in the form of memories, but not in a language machines can understand. It’s a problem that the military has been grappling with for years.

Extreme Market Distortion: German Power Prices Could Be Negative 1000 Hours A Year!

Extreme Market Distortion: German Power Prices Could Be Negative 1000 Hours A Year!:

Germany’s Energiewende is faltering badly.

At least that’s what Christoph Eisenring of the Zurich based daily NZZ writes here, claiming the Energiewende (transition to renewable energies) is a false model for the rest of the world.

The truth is that the Energiewende is on the same path as the construction of the Berlin BER airport – racing down the highway to total debacle – something that everyone is doing their damnedest to ignore and wishing it would just go away.

Moreover, Eisenring writes, it is causing “collateral damage” to Germany’s neighboring countries, as huge supply fluctuations threaten to destabilize their grids and electricity markets.

Only 1% of rated capacity!

Manufacturing Might Come Back to the US, but Robots will Get the Jobs: Apple CEO:

Robots are the Great Equalizer.

Apple will invest in and promote “advanced manufacturing” in the US, CEO Tim Cook told CNBC’s Jim Cramer on Wednesday after the somewhat uninspiring earnings report. It was one of the ways Apple would create jobs in America, he said. To do that, Apple would put $1 billion in a fund that would invest in “advanced manufacturing” companies.

Apple has already “created two million jobs in America,” he said in the interview. This includes 80,000 jobs at Apple in the US; plus jobs at US suppliers, such as Corning, which makes the glass for the iPhone and iPad, and 3M, which makes adhesives that Apple uses in its devices; plus the “developer community” of almost 1.5 million people who write apps that, as he said, “change the world.”

Wi-Fi & phone signals could be used to map your home – study

Wi-Fi & phone signals could be used to map your home – study:

Scientists are now able to create an image of objects in remote spaces using only wireless internet and phone signals, according to new research that’s likely to alarm privacy advocates.

Researchers from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) created hologram images of an aluminum cross by bombarding it with microwave radiation from household Wi-Fi transmitters and measuring the distortions as the waves reflected off it. The result is a microwave hologram.

Self-Driving Recycling Machine Pulled 1 Million lbs of Trash from Baltimore Harbor

Self-Driving Recycling Machine Pulled 1 Million lbs of Trash from Baltimore Harbor:

In Baltimore, there’s a self-driving machine that’s pulling garbage from the river — and they call it Mr. Trash Wheel. That’s because, quite literally, it’s a water wheel being powered by the river’s current.

The wheel propels the platform forward, and then the collected trash is deposited to a rear dumpster via conveyer belt. On days when the current is too weak, Mr. Trash Wheel can be powered by solar panels attached to its canopy.

Solar Road Costs $4.3 Million – Generates Enough Power To Run ONE Microwave

Jul 15, 2014

After the solar roadways project made all these claims that they were basically ready to start manufacturing their solar roadway panels… turns out, that merely 4 years ago, the thought it would take ~50 million USD.
This is ignoring all the other issues they had:
-no functional road surface
-no plan for road manufacture
-no cost realistic plans for implementation of power transport systems.
