Record snowfall in Kashmir

Record snowfall in Kashmir:

11-feet snow depth in Gurez – Avalanches kill 18, so far

A Meteorological department official said Kashmir has recorded  the heaviest snowfall in the valley since 1992.

“We had witnessed major snowfall in 1992 and 2006 but the present snowfall has broken the record of last 25 years,” the official said.

The ski resort of Gulmarg has recorded more than 7 ft (2 meters) of snowfall while Gurez has experienced about 11 ft (335 cm).

The plains, including Srinagar, have also experienced heavy snowfall.

Many roads in the Valley are closed and electricity has been lost, with North Kashmir being the worst hit.

The Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only link road connecting Kashmir with rest of the Valley, remained closed for the 4th consecutive day today.

Due to closure of that highway, prices of essential commodities have shot up. The Valley, which is totally dependent on the highway for supplies. is also facing shortage of cooking gas.

Police say it will take some time to allow traffic on the highway because the snow is 10-12 feet deep at some places.

Meanwhile, Kashmir avalanches have killed 14 Indian soldiers and four civilians.
