ROME (AFP) – Rescuers saved some 1,400 migrants off the coast of Libya on Monday as Italy announced a record number of people arriving this year after crossing the Mediterranean, authorities said.

“It was a very difficult day but thanks to the work of the units that helped out, all of the migrants were rescued,” a spokesman for the Italian coast guard, which coordinates the operations, told AFP.

The Kremlin is ready to consider the issue of granting the Russian citizenship to Paul Craig Roberts, former US Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy, if he were to file a corresponding application, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Earlier this week, Roberts asked Russian President Vladimir Putin in an open letter for a Russian passport. The official reminded that Putin had granted citizenship to Steven Seagal, expressing hope that “being a Russian agent is as important as teaching martial arts to Russians.” “A corresponding application needs to be filed in order to receive citizenship. Trump’s Treasury secretary as soon as Wednesday.

The WSJ has confirmed as much, reporting that “President-elect Donald Trump will name longtime banker and former Goldman Sachs executive Steven Mnuchin as Treasury secretary, turning to a campaign loyalist and fundraiser for the incoming administration’s top economic cabinet post, a transition official said Tuesday.”

Having stated in the past that the only reason Turkish forces are on Syrian soil is to combat Islamic State terrorists, today Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan made a dramatic diplomatic reversal and said that the Turkish Army has entered Syria to end the rule of President Bashar Assad, whom he accused of terrorism and causing the deaths of thousands.

“We entered [Syria] to end the rule of the tyrant al-Assad who terrorizes with state terror. [We didn’t enter] for any other reason,” the Turkish president was quoted by Huyrriyet as saying at the first Inter-Parliamentary Jerusalem Platform Symposium in Istanbul. Erdogan said that Turkey has no territorial claims in Syria, but instead wants to hand over power to the Syrian population, adding that Ankara is seeking to restore “justice.”

“Why did we enter? We do not have an eye on Syrian soil. The issue is to provide lands to their real owners. That is to say we are there for the establishment of justice,” he said, taking a page out of the US playbook, which however in recent weeks has been muted following substantial advances by Syrian and Russian forces which as reported last night, have made material gains in the fight against Syrian rebels in east Aleppo.

EUROPE is on the brink of war as Turkey gathers fleets of boats to ship 3,000 migrants a day to Greece in retaliation over the European Union’s (EU) vote to freeze accession talks.

Greek intelligence officers have discovered the Turkish plans which they say involve thousands of dinghies and motorboats already being gathered along Turkey’s western coast.

The analysts said Syrian migrants are preparing to board the vessels and wash up on Greek shores “within a matter of weeks”.

National intelligence officials estimate at least 3,000 undocumented migrants could enter Greece each day under the plan.

In a major breakthrough in the government’s push to retake the whole city, regime forces captured six rebel-held districts of eastern Aleppo over the weekend, including Masaken Hanano, the biggest of those.   • Outside the group smoked and joked around before shouting at Ms Giufre 

A reckless driver who left a woman brain damaged and partially blind and deaf smiled as he faced her in court on Monday.

Bashar Hawchar, 20, admitted dragging Samantha Giufre, also 20, along the street with his car in Sydney in 2014 before she fell into the gutter and hit her head, leaving her with life-long injuries.
