Did Anyone Live In Palestine Prior to the Formation of Israel? (Washington’s Blog, July 14, 2014):

There Were People In Palestine

Many claim that no one lived in Palestine prior to the formation of the state of Israel. Indeed, Israel was sited in Palestine under the slogan:

“A land without a people for a people without a land” ….

But the history of Palestine is much more complicated:

The claim that no one lived in Palestine is undercut by this video footage shot in 1896:

And any implication that there was no place called Palestine is undercut by this travel advertisement from the 1940s:

  1. Prior to 1948, Jews and Arabs lived in the Mandate. Many of the Arabs were migrants from other Arab countries and many Jews came from Europe. In 1948, Jordan occupied East Jerusalem and the territory which is now referred to as the West Bank and no non-Jews objected. It was called Jordan prior to 1967. In 1922, Britain lopped off 78% of what was then its mandate and created a new country west of the Jordan River called Transjordan. So the dispute is actually over only 22% of what was called Palestine; the rest was already given to the Arabs. The dispute exists because Jews exist there.
