US Chemical Weapons Report in Syria ‘Cooked’ – Russian MP

US Chemical Weapons Report in Syria ‘Fabricated’ – Russian MP (RIA Novosti, June 14, 2013):

MOSCOW, June 14 (RIA Novosti) – A US government report concluding Syria has used chemical weapons against rebels, crossing what US President Barack Obama has previously described as a “red line,” is a fabrication, a senior Russian lawmaker said Friday.

“Information about the usage of chemical weapons by [Syrian President Bashar] Assad is fabricated in the same way as the lie about [Saddam] Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction [in Iraq],” Alexei Pushkov, head of the Russian lower house of parliament’s international affairs committee, said on Twitter.

US intelligence reports presented to the UN and the international community prior to the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 claimed Saddam Hussein’s regime possessed weapons of mass destruction including nerve agents, ballistic missiles and a nuclear weapons program. The US claimed the threat posed by those weapons justified the invasion of Iraq, but after the country was occupied, the alleged weapons of mass destruction were never found.

President Obama “is going the same way” as former President George W. Bush did then, Pushkov said.

The White House said on Thursday it now believes with “high confidence” that Syrian government forces have used chemical weapons many times during the two-year conflict there, and vowed to boost US aid to the armed opposition fighting to remove Assad from power.

White House Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said Obama had decided to provide further support, including military support, for Syrian opposition forces as a result of its conclusion that government forces has used such chemical weapons.

Rhodes declined to clarify whether this support would entail providing arms to the Syrian opposition, but said US aid to armed opposition on the ground would differ greatly “in scope and scale” from assistance Washington had previously provided to the rebels. The US goal, Rhodes said, is to “strengthen their effectiveness.”

Syrian government officials have accused opposition forces of using chemical weapons against President Bashar Assad’s military in a March attack in outside of the northern city of Aleppo.

Some 93,000 people are believed to have died since fighting broke out between Syrian government forces and rebels in March 2011, according to the latest UN figures.

Updated at 11:02 to change “cooked” to “fabricated” in headline and first quote by Pushkov

  1. It is the perpetual war that disturbs me. Ever since GW Bush took over, we have had nothing but billions sucked out of this once rich economy to enrich a few greedy corporations. Fascism, as defined by Mussolini, is the perfect marriage of industry and government. This has happened in just a few short years. We no longer build anything, these greedy corporations enrich themselves at public expense by building the weapons and body parts overseas using cheap foreign labor………..they have given us all the costs, and none of the benefits of war. Even the ancient Romans understood some of the booty had to go into the public treasury to keep Rome a rich country. Not these clowns, they give us the debt, and all the wealth is privatized.
This is so wrong on so many levels. We can no longer trust anything we are told by our government. A no fly zone is code for war. I am so sick of it.
They spy on us, they steal from all other nations to enrich greedy corporations.
Look at Iraq. It is time someone did. Iraq had 63 major oil outlets, and was very rich. Saddam was also one who spoke out against the US dollar remaining the world reserve currency, said it should be gold, since we dropped the gold standard.
We invaded them, set up a puppet government, and all 63 oil outlets were leased at very low rates to corporations for long term leases. They get all the profit, we got all the costs of life, limb and money. Not one drop of oil was set aside for US enrichment…..all for the corporations.
Now, the Iraq people are angry we have stolen their oil. US media calls them insurgents, they are fighting back from our outright theft.
Now, the Afghans. They have minerals, that is why we are there. In 2010, China stopped selling us those rare earth minerals we need. So, we go into these underdeveloped countries and steal their’s.
I cannot believe how far we have fallen in my lifetime.
Thanks for all you do, you are very brave in this Big Brother era to speak your truth openly to all who will heed.
    Best regards,
    Marilyn
