Researcher Detects 20,000 Bq/Kg Of Cesium In Fukushima Earthworm

20,000 Bq/Kg from earthworm (Fukushima Diary, Feb. 5, 2012):

Mr. Hasegawa Motohiro from Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute measured 20,000 Bq/kg of cesium from earthworm.

The sample was taken in Kawauchi mura Fukushima, from late August to September. The air dose was 3.11 microSv/h. The soil is contaminated as 1,380,000 Bq/m2.

A part of Kawauchi mura is in the evacuation area.

They also took the samples at 2 different locations in Fukushima.

Ohtamamura (60km from Fukushima)
Air dose : 0.33 microSv/h
Soil : 80,000~120,000 Bq/m2
Earthworm : 1,000 Bq/Kg

Tadami mura (150km from Fukushima)
Air dose : 0.12 microSv/h
Soil : 20,000 Bq/m2
Earthworm : 290 Bq/kg

They analyse it is because most of the cesium is stuck to the leaves. Earthworm ate leaves with soil so they were contaminated too.

Earthworm is in the bottom of the ecological chain. As biological concentration goes up, the internal exposure will be more severe.
