- US aircraft carrier ‘spotted’ in Iran wargames zone (Ynet, Dec. 29, 2011):

Washington announced Wednesday that possible closure of Strait of Hormuz by Tehran ‘would not be tolerated’

A US aircraft carrier entered a zone near the Strait of Hormuz being used by the Iranian navy for wargames, an Iranian official said Thursday amid rising tensions over the key oil-transit channel.

“A US aircraft carrier was spotted inside the maneuver zone… by a navy reconnaissance aircraft,” Commodore Mahmoud Mousavi, the spokesman for the Iranian exercises, told the official IRNA news agency.

The Iranian aircraft took video and photos of the US vessel, he added.

The US aircraft carrier was believed to the USS John C. Stennis, one of the US navy’s biggest warships.

- NUCLEAR ACCIDENT INTERIM REPORT / Fears slowed SPEEDI info (The Daily Yomiuri, Dec. 30, 2011):

The System for Prediction of Environmental Emergency Dose Information (SPEEDI)–the government computer system that projects the dispersal of radioactive substances–was designed to pinpoint which areas should be evacuated after a nuclear accident. However, the government initially withheld SPEEDI’s projections after the Fukushima nuclear crisis erupted, claiming that releasing the data “would cause unnecessary panic.”

The interim report by the government panel investigating the crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant says each organization involved in this process lacked awareness of their responsibility. The report urges these entities to improve how SPEEDI is operated to better protect residents’ lives and their dignity.

- From Planes To Trains: TSA Expands Spot Searches To Union Station (CBS News, Dec. 27, 2011):

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — An all-too-familiar sight at LAX and the rest of the nation’s airports will soon be coming to the city’s busiest train station.

KNX 1070′s Pete Demetriou reports rail passengers have started seeing Transportation Security Administration on patrol at Union Station on a more frequent basis.

As many as 25 VIPR (Visible Intermodal Prevention & Response) teams began patrolling train stations nationwide last summer conducting an estimated 9,300 “suspicionless” spot searches of travelers.

The agency has said the presence of officers with explosive detection dogs, radiation monitors and other devices will act as a deterrent in the nation’s busiest travel hubs.

- TEPCO says it ‘no longer owns’ Fukushima fallout (The Australian, Dec. 27, 2011):

IN terms of sheer chutzpah, Tokyo Electric Power Co’s claim that it no longer owns the radioactive isotopes that spewed out of its Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in March takes some beating.

In defending a lawsuit from a Fukushima Prefecture golf club, lawyers said the radioactive cesium that had blighted the Sunfield Nihonmatsu golf course’s fairways and greens was the club’s problem. The utility has taken a similarly hard line defending claims from ryokan (inn) and onsen (spa) owners.

TEPCO’s lawyers used the arcane legal principle of res nullius to argue the emissions that escaped after the tsunami and earthquake triggered a meltdown were no longer its responsibility. “Radioactive materials (such as cesium) that scattered and fell from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant belong to individual landowners, not TEPCO,” the utility told Tokyo District Court.

- #Radioactive Car Emitting Over 30 Microsieverts/Hr in Musashino City in Tokyo Was Returned to Fukushima (EX-SKF, Dec. 30, 2011):

The owner of the car got it from his friend in July and the car was from (guess where) the 20-kilometer radius “no entry zone” in Fukushima Prefecture.

The 20-kilometer “no-entry zone” was officially off-limit until June and the residents weren’t allowed to use their own cars until September. Unofficially, there were “rumors” (i.e. not reported in the media) during the summer that people were hired to go and retrieve vehicles inside the 20-kilometer zone. There were also “rumors” of sudden deaths among people who were doing exactly that. The existence of this car in Musashino City, Tokyo is a proof that these reports may have been true.

The car was found emitting over 30 microsieverts/hour radiation at the front grill and inside the engine room. At the perimeter of the parking lot at 1 meter high, the air radiation was 3 microsieverts/hour. Judging by the way the city crafted the announcement, their survey meter went overscale at 30 microsieverts/hour, and the actual radiation level could be much higher.

It was only on December 21 that a citizen finally alerted the city about this radioactivity on wheels.

From the announcement at the Musashino City website:

中町2丁目の駐車場にあった乗用車について、12月21日(水)に市民から高放射線量の情報提供を受け、市で測定したところ、高放射線量が確認されたため、下記のとおり対応いたしました。

Regarding the automobile in a parking garage in Nakacho 2-chome, we were notified by a resident on December 21 of the high radioactivity. We measured the radiation level and confirmed it to be high. Therefore we did the following in response:

- Fukushima Mother to Reporter: “I Wish My Daughters Were Never Born” (Rocket News 24, Dec. 30, 2011):

About 70km from Fukushima Daiichi, on the boarder of Fukushima and Tochigi prefectures lies the city of Shirakawa. It’s was a pleasant city with lots of green space that was mentioned by Basho in his famous poem The Narrow Road to Oku. Every year they hold the Daruma Ichi festival that celebrates Daruma dolls, traditional toys that symbolize perseverance and good luck.

However now the background radiation is at times 0.60μSv which is about three times the average dose of radiation we receive during our daily lives. Here, a tearful mother of two confesses to reporter investigating financial compensation something that a mother should never have to say: “I wish my daughters were never born.”

The 48 year-old thought she was doing the right thing by remaining in Shirakawa with her two daughters (14 and 15). Tied into a mortgage and with nowhere else to stay the daughters would also have to deal with changing high schools, which is notoriously complicated for students in Japan. However, as the days passed, the reality of her situation began to sink in. Every day she has to wonder if it’s safe to drink the water or go outside and risk thyroid cancer or other health problems. Even if it doesn’t happen today there is no sign of this situation ending.

“When I think of the worries and hardships they will be burdened with for the rest of their lives I wish they were never born into this. I apologize to them for giving birth to them” the mother wept to the reporter.
