– 5.7-magnitude shakes Fukushima (UPI, Oct. 10,2011):
TOKYO — A 5.7-magnitude earthquake Monday rattled Japan’s Fukushima prefecture, which has yet to fully recover from the quake-tsunami disaster seven months ago.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported the 5.7-magnitude quake struck 11.46 a.m. local time Monday at a depth of 27.2 miles off the east coast of Honshu Island, the country’s largest Island where Tokyo is also located.
The epicenter was about 45 miles east-southeast of Fukushima and 152 miles north-northeast of Tokyo.
Kyodo News reported the Japan Meteorological Agency measured the quake at 5.6-magnitude. The quake also was felt in adjacent Miyagi prefecture.
Fukushima was devastated by the 9-magnitude earthquake and trailing tsunami on March 11. The disaster also triggered Japan’s worst-ever post-World War II radiation crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which is yet to be fully contained.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to properties from the quake Monday, and no tsunami warning was issued, China’s Xinhua news agency reported.
