Citizen’s Arrest: Boy, 13, Busted For Illegal Permanent Marker Possession By Oklahoma Math Teacher

In case you want to know why education sucks:

George Carlin: The American Dream

DECEMBER 22–A 13-year-old boy was arrested Friday for using a permanent marker while in class at his Oklahoma City middle school, a violation of an obscure city ordinance.

According to an Oklahoma City Police Department report, the boy was spotted “in possession of a permanent marker” by Roosevelt Middle School teacher DeLynn Woodside. The 50-year-old educator told cop Miguel Campos that the student was “writing on a piece of paper, which caused it to bleed over onto the desk.”

Woodside, pictured at right, reported that the child, whose name was redacted by police from the report, attempted to hide the marker when she asked him for it. Strangely, Woodside’s Facebook page reveals that her “likes and interests” include the official “Sharpie Permanent Markers” page on Facebook.

Campos reported that he allowed Woodside, a seventh grade math teacher, to “sign a citation” against the boy, who was then transported to the Community Intervention Center, a juvenile holding facility. A police sergeant subsequently “booked the marker into the property room.”

A police spokesman referred to the student’s bust as a “citizen’s arrest” effectuated by Woodside.

The marker ban–which apparently is aimed at curbing graffiti–stems from a city ordinance making it illegal to possess spray paint or a permanent marker on private property (without the owner’s permission).

  1. On another comment board, someone claiming to be another teacher at the school sympathizes with this teacher because she says that every week students are tagging graffiti all over the bathroom walls, and the school maintenance crew is busy all the time repainting the walls and repairing the damage. I ask this: is this an indicator that school “socialization” is a good thing? For whatever reason, there appear to be a lot of kids in school who act pathologically, although I am not specifically referring to the student in this article. I am “homeschooling” my children, they already are at a kindergarten to first grade achievement level and learning 2 foreign languages, and they are only 2 and 3/4 years old. Whenever I hear naive people tell me that my kids will miss out on the wonderful “socialization” of the school systems, I just laugh and think about stupid stories like this, as well as the comments from other teachers about how they sympathize with teachers like this. The schools are a mess and a police state. They have police stationed at every government school these days, never were there police in school when I was a kid. If you are smart, save your money, stop spending on expensive cars, vacations, and electronic gadgets, and learn about homeschooling. Your kids will end up learning a lot more in a lot less time and be exposed only to the friends and social and play activities that YOU approve of. You can create FAR better socialization opportunities for your child than the government schools can. If you are smart, don’t send them to school, and if they’re already in school, get them out if they agree with the idea of independent study. Do some homework first by reading about homeschooling with articles online or by books.

  2. A 13 yr old kid gets busted for having a permanent marker. I can’t understand it. Nowadays, people can actually get arrested for farting. Something needs to be done to fix out educational system. I mean, what happened to arts and crafts?
